(WFLX) - Some business professionals, looking for an added level of protection, are spending big bucks for high security fashion.
"In terms of tactical vests, there's a lot of interior and exterior vests that are bullet-proof or bullet-resistant," said Marisha Kelly, spokesperson for Miguel Caballero USA. "But as far as clothing that's discreet body armor where you can go into a casual setting and blend in with the normal crowd, very few. I mean, if you look at some of the clothing, it looks like a normal article, and you can just wear it with a pair of jeans or a pair of pants."
So far, there's only one major designer selling in the U.S. Items range in price from around $800 to $14,000. Of course, that depends on the size, style and level of protection. The higher the level of protection, the more expensive the garment. "That's not protection against all types of bullets, because, for every ballistic model, there's a bullet that can pierce it. So this offers protection against specified bullets that we've outlined.
So, if a 9mm is more accessible in a certain country; then, we'll recommend a certain level of protection."
Jorge Cardenas is one of a small but growing number of Americans with high-risk occupations who wear bullet-resistant clothing that's made to look normal -- not the bulky and obvious vests worn by police officers. "This is a level II protection. It would cover most handguns that are on the streets. It will not take an ak-47 or a rifle, but we don't expect to be in that type of situation."
He spent about $1,000 on the hooded jacket. "The whole idea is to blend in, go in, go out, and reload the machines, and that's that."
Industry experts say this type of product is not heavily advertised, so most individuals and companies don't even know the clothing exists.
