JENSEN BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A Martin County couple has been charged with child neglect for leaving their 7-month-old baby in a hot car while they shopped.

Monica Alastra and Walter Lugo told police Monday they "used poor judgement" and "didn't know what they were thinking" when they left their baby girl in the car for 30 minutes while they shopped at Joanne's Fabrics in Jensen Beach.

Witnesses reported the baby in the car, and investigators found Alastra and Lugo shopping with a 3-year-old inside the store. The vehicle was discovered unlocked with the windows rolled-up and the ignition turned off.

The baby was sweating and agitated but unharmed.

The Department of Children and Families was notified and both children were turned over to a family member.

Alastra and Lugo remained calm when confronted by Deputy Martella regarding the discovery of their child and became upset only when told they were being placed under arrest.
