PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) Port St. Lucie neighbors are outraged over plans to build a large cell phone tower right in front of their homes.
Neighbors who live on Dalton Circle are used to a small 911 tower, but the St. Lucie County Fire District was approached by T-Mobile to expand the small tower to a bigger cell phone tower, placed feet from homes.
T-Mobile is offering to pay $1600 a month in rent for the land.
Many neighbors hate the idea, citing studies linking cell phone towers to cancer, and decreased property values. One resident, Ed Leary, says, "I'm opposed to it. Who wants to look out their door and see a big ugly tower?"
Buddy Emerson of the St. Lucie County Fire District says, "It's really a trade off. Off setting tax revenue is a way so residents don't feel the burden."
The city council will discuss this issue at their next meeting next Monday.
