PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A local father is facing tough questions for what happened Monday afternoon. Vets say the puppy is lucky to be alive after being dragged nearly two miles through the streets of Port St. Lucie.

"I had no idea I was dragging my dog," said Napoleon Davis.

What was going through his head -- putting this 6-month-old puppy into the back of his truck, tying it up with a 15 foot leash, and then taking off? "I wasn't thinking."

Napoleon Davis, the man openly admitting to dragging little Holly for 1.9 miles. Davis was leaving his family's home here on Iffla Ave shortly after 9 a.m. Monday. "Trying to get her care by taking her to the humane society."

He turned out of the neighborhood, and Holly jumped out. She was still attached to the leash, still attached to the truck. People driving by were watching in horror, called 911, trying to get Davis to stop. "It felt like it was one of my own children -- like I had killed one of my own children."

It was, at this point, that Davis called 911 himself, but it was already too late. The dog, badly hurt, is fighting for her life.

Day two at the vet's for Holly involved painful surgery as they have to amputate some of her toes. They aren't sure if she'll walk again. "To see an animal get mangled and almost dragged to death, I understand everybody's comments and what everybody is saying, but I am truly remorseful."

Davis faces animal cruelty charges for the dragging, and his truck is still impounded. It was a gift from his church who also bailed him out Mondaynight.

Now, it's Holly, clinging to life, hoping for her break.
