Man charged with beating death of 12-month-old

BOCA RATON – A 19-year-old man has been arrested for beating his girlfriend's 12-month-old son to death.

Carlos Rivera, of 472 Hardwood Place, has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse for killing little Christiano Belle-Felixa one day before his first birthday.

Rivera called police December 19 to report the baby wasn't breathing. Officers arrived, performed CPR and transported Christiano to Boca Raton Community Hospital.

Officers and doctors saw bruises on the baby's face and body.  On Sunday, December 20, Christiano died from his injuries.

An autopsy showed Christiano had a depressed skull fracture, retinal hemorrhaging, and a fractured or dislocated right elbow.  There were bruises on his forehead, ear, eyes, temple, abdomen, and on the right and left sides of his head.  Investigators met with the Medical Examiner yesterday, and were told Christiano died of multiple blunt force injuries.

Jessica Belle-Chaves, Christiano's mother, told police Rivera was alone with Christiano on more than one occasion when Christiano sustained his wounds, including the multiple blunt force injuries. Boca Raton detectives arrested Rivera on December 30, 2009 without incident.  Carlos Rivera was charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
