Pain clinic opens, in spite of moratorium

By Chuck Weber

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX)-A new pain clinic has opened near West Palm Beach, in spite of a moratorium recently enacted to stop the proliferation of the controversial businesses.

In a shopping center on Okeechobee Boulevard, a sign above the storefront reads "Medical Center." But a sign near the road reading "pain clinic," gives a more accurate portrayal of the business.

The clinic opened in recent days, even though in early December, Palm Beach County commissioners approved a moratorium on new pain clinics. The head of code enforcement for the County explained the clinic started getting approval to open, months before the moratorium.

"On Monday our parking lot was pretty full," lamented the owner of another business in the shopping center, who did not want to be identified. She showed us an empty Oxycodone bottle she found in the parking lot.

"There were cars from out-of-state with several people in them," the owner said. "One person goes into the pain clinic and the other people wait for him to come out. When our customers come in and see that type of individual out there, it's scary. Not the kind of people you want to be around."

Vanessa Robinson, the owner of another business, Salon Voila, said she's taking a wait and see approach. "I've seen the owners and they're great," she said. "But what I've heard comes with pain clinics, and what they bring in, has me concerned. But the landlord is aware. He tells me he's going to stay on it."

The clinic door was locked when we visited. We called the number on the door. As of early Thursday evening, no one had returned our call.
