BBB releases top 10 scams of '09

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - It seems people are getting more sophisticated in their efforts to rip you off. The Better Business Bureau just issued a list of the top 10 scams and rip-offs of the year just passed (release on BBB.org).

Topping the list are the come-ons for acai berry supplements and other "free" trial offers. Kim Herdman of Boca Raton said she had to learn the hard way.

Herdman said she responded to a pitch on the Internet, signing up for a free trial for an acai product. She paid only for shipping and handling -- putting the charges on a credit card.

But she continued automatically receiving product from the company. Herdman said it took several calls and a letter to get them to stop sending the goods. In the meantime, the charges piled up.

"Probably almost $300," lamented Herdman, who said she never got her money back. "Do not give your credit card number to anybody without knowing exactly what you're getting. Research, research, research."

Rounding out the rest of the Better Business Bureau list:

  1. Come-ons for acai berry supplements
  2. Stimulus/government grant scams
  3. So-called robocalls -- automated calls to your cell or home phone
  4. Lottery/sweepstakes scams-- these come in the mail
  5. Job hunter scams
  6. Google work from home scams
  7. Foreclosure rescue/debt assistance scams
  8. The be-a-mystery shopper come-on
  9. Over-payment scams
  10. Phishing e-mails and come-ons for H1N1 prevention
