Vitamins & Infections

Patrick, like 40% of you out there, takes nutrients like these. He takes vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to stay well. He takes good care of himself: he exercises, eats properly, sleeps, doesn't abuse aspirin, alcohol or smoke and he takes his nutrients. But does it make a difference? A recent study at the University of North Carolina sheds a lot of light on these nutrients in terms of preventing disease. Let me tell you about it.

The study took 130 people between the ages of 45 and 65 and studied them over a one year period of time. They divided them in two - one a placebo group and another who took vitamins and minerals. They found over that year span that the vitamin group had an incidence of infection of about 47%. The placebo group: 70% infections, therefore almost double the rate of infections if they were not taing the vitamins and minerals. Then they took diabetics in the group who have a high incidence of infections and split them. They found the diabetics who took the vitamins, minerals & antioxidants had an infection rate of about 17% - but those who didn't: 90%, almost 4 & 1/2 times higher. So what does that tell us?

We now have the first study that shows these vitamins, minerals & antioxidants can prevent infections. Dr Thomas Behringer, who lead this study at the University of North Carolina said the report needs more studies and has to be repeated - so it is very preliminary. So when it comes to preventing infections, especially if you're diabetic, I would advise getting with the 40% of us who take these supplements becuase I think it works.

I'm Dr David Vastola and that's life.
