LAKE PARK (WFLX) - A local Shell gas station sets the scene for an unexpected delivery. A woman came in asking for the restroom key at the Lake Park store and came out with a lifeless baby.
The I-95/Northlake Shell usually sees a lot of action around 5 a.m. on a Sunday. The owner, Kevin Dalton, says, "Our employees have to react to idiots coming from the bars. Last [Saturday] night things were a little different."
No, it wasn't a lotto winner, overdose or death, but they've seen three of those. It was the birth of a baby.
Cashier Tammy Camp was on the register when she recalls seeing a young woman acting in pain, looking for the outside restroom key. Minutes later, she walked out, cradling the unexpected in her jacket. "I noticed she had something in her arms. She was bleeding. We saw the baby, and she said she just had a baby." Camp continues, "She thought the baby died. She laid it on the trunk, and that's when I took the baby."
Camp immediately called 911. They told her what to do. "I tried to stimulate the baby, 911 told me to clear the airway," she says. "It started making noise."
Soon after, the cry of a newborn baby girl could be heard all around the gas station. Just three minutes later, Palm Beach Gardens Fire-Rescue arrived to tend to the baby and mother who was bleeding profusely. Both were taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where they are said to be just fine.
