We've all seen the devastating pictures of Haiti, ravaged by an earthquake.

A Treasure Coast man lived through it.

Jeanoperny Petit  of Ft. Pierce was at a friend's house in Port-au-Prince last week when the earthquake hit.

He is in serious condition at St. Lucie Medical Center, being treated for cuts, numerous bruises, and kidney failure.

Through an interpreter, he told us what the horrifying ordeal was like.

"I over was at my friend's house, having a meeting. When I heard the earthquake, the house was shaking. I was on the third floor when the house fell on top of me. I was there for 15 hours.  I cannot get out.  I tried hard to get out. I can't get out. The concrete was on top of me, I was in so much pain. I cannot move my legs, I cannot do nothing," Petit said from his hospital bed.

Finally, he says he heard a voice of someone searching for survivors and that person pulled him out.

Petit and his wife, who live in Ft. Pierce,  say their home in Haiti was completely destroyed. They still have three children in Haiti, ages 10, 11, and 13.  They were unhurt, and are staying with relatives.

Doctors say his kidney failure may be permanent, and he may need dialysis treatments for the rest of his life.

His wife Elise says for four  agonizing days she did not know if her husband was alive, until she got a call from his brother in Haiti.  Petit managed to get to the Dominican Republic and then from there, he flew to Miami Monday where his wife picked him up and brought him to the emergency room.

"I thank God he's alive.  He make it. It's a miracle, it's a miracle," she said while sitting next to her husband's hospital bed.
