PORT ST LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A local woman pleads guilty to killing her 8-year-old son on Christmas day back in 2008 (read story). The Treasure Coast mom even admitted to police what she did.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Eryn Allegra to life in prison after she pleaded no contest to the death of her son.

Port St. Lucie police say she reserved a room at the Holiday Inn, gave Tristan eight Advil pills, and let him sleep. Then, she smothered him. She tried killing herself, but was unsuccessful. That's when she called 911.

Now, guilty of first degree murder and aggravated child abuse, she will serve a life sentence plus 30 years; though, the state attorney's office wanted the death penalty. "It's as fair as we can get it. It's as harsh a punishment we could obtain, short of the death penalty. But it's an 8-year-old boy's life. What's a fair exchange?"

"To take Tristan. We are devastated," said Tristan's paternal grandmother in court.

Looking directly at her former daughter-in-law, she told Allegra how she has destroyed her life, and the life of Tristan's father. "We loved Tristan. His whole family loved him. He loved everyone. I don't know what brought you to do this."

Allegra's grandmother spoke to reporters after the sentence. She still supports Eryn -- even standing for most of the hearing to show her support. "I was just kidding myself all along thinking I was going to bring her home."

It has not yet been determined where Allegra will serve her life sentence, but the grandmother, who raised Eryn, says she will visit her wherever she is sent -- no matter the distance.
