Teens dodge traffic to help Haiti

WEST PALM BEACH, FL(WFLX)-- It's a busy and dangerous location: the intersection of Palm Beach Lakes and Okeechobee Boulevards during the evening rush.

But a group of teens spent their after-school hours here amidst speeding cars and trucks looking for drivers to give them a little hope.

"I don't know where they are staying, I just know their house is gone," said Atlantic High School Senior Rebecca Gedeon. She is talking about her 20 or so family members who nearly a month after the earthquake in Haiti, still don't have a roof over their heads.

That's why she and other members of the youth group at Power Evangelism Ministries decided to take it to the streets, setting up their own Haiti relief mission by asking donations from drivers.

Minister Brandon Young who supervises an outreach branch of the Minnesota-based church in Palm Beach County is gathering relief items to be shipped to Haiti as soon as possible.

The collection drives are being held to pay for the shipping of the goods and transportation for church volunteers.

For his congregation it's personal.

"A lot of our members have family in Haiti. So they wanted to know what can be done to get involved," said Young.

Back on the streets, it's tough work.

"The people can give you a tough time, but I focus on God and that's my strength. I just move on to the next person that says yes," said Gedeon.
