Building implosion causes minor damage to neighbors



WEST PALM BEACH-The takedown of the 1515 Tower is considered a success.  It took just seconds to bring the 300-foot high rise straight to the ground near downtown West Palm Beach Sunday morning.


And while neighbors have been almost unanimous in their praise of the implosion of the hurricane-damaged condo, the destruction did cause some minor damage.


Immediately south of 1515, at the Viking Arms condo, manager Seth Shulman said Monday the implosion left two broken windows.  By mid-morning the contractor in charge of the demolition, BG Group of Boca Raton, had a window crew on site, installing replacements.


Less than a block away at a law office, attorney Brent Davis said he had damage to some barrel tiles on his roof.  "It's like a couple of tiles," said Davis.  "I can see the dust from the tiles in the parking lot.  I got a couple of rocks on the roof.  But overall we're pretty lucky, pretty happy."


Terri Shapleigh, manager of the Norton Park Place condo, just to the north of 1515, said her building escaped broken windows.  However dust and small rubble rocks still littered her lawn, and some hurricane shutters could not be opened, because the tracks were gummed up by debris pebbles.


Shapleigh said the demolition contractor promised to send a crew to open the shutters and hose the building down again.  "We can all live through it another night," said Shapleigh.
"The problem is over," she said, referring to the 1515 eyesore that plagued the neighborhood for five years. "Now, we're just picking up the pieces,
