PALM CITY, FL (WFLX) - Local teachers are rallying around one of their own. Karen Gangi's husband nearly died in a freak accident out of state. Fellow teachers want to help her by giving their own paid sick days, so she can stay by her husband's side.

Karen's a second grade teacher. Her husband, Rob, was skateboarding with kids at his parents home in North Carolina when he fell.  He landed on his head, and he wasn't wearing a helmet.  Now, his wife's colleagues want to help, but they can't give away their sick days.

Palm City Elementary's principal, Nancy Marin said, "It's sad, it's disappointing that the restriction is there, but I have confidence that the legal opinion is very correct."

In Florida teachers can't transfer sick days to their co-workers.  Tonight the Martin County commission is set to explain the state's policy to teachers and explore other options, but those options are few.
