HOBE SOUND, FL (WFLX) - One day in December, 9-year-old Everett Cancio forgot his lunch. So, his mom wanted to teach him the lesson of responsibility.
Everett usually packs his lunch every morning. His mother, Laura Cancio, then decided to write an e-mail to his teacher explaining Everett should not be fed. The teacher responded seeming to agree.
When Everett got home, she found out her son was fed, and her son said the principal told him what his mother was doing was illegal. Laura was shocked.
She knows it's not illegal. "It's to teach him a lesson. You know, I (Everett) really didn't have my priorities this morning. Because he's a bright boy, he's on honor roll."
The SeaWind Elementary principal quickly told the family he was incorrect in saying what she was asking was illegal; however, the school was not going to accommodate those wishes.
Tuesday, the Martin County School District gave us this response on the two-month long issue. They tell us in part that students who are fed do better in school, and "it's not the practice of the School District to withhold meals from students."
