FDA Salmonella scare

You may not have heard of the product, but a key flavor enhancer in processed foods is being recalled by the FDA because of concerns it may contain salmonella.

HVP or Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is used to enhance many types of food including soups, dressings and seasoned snack foods such as potato chips.

As of This afternoon, nearly 30 products had been recalled as a preventative measure.

No one has gotten sick yet, but a routine inspection of HVP distributor Basic Food Flavors in Las Vegas turned up salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with compromised immune systems, small children, and the elderly although none have been reported.

The full list of recalled items can be found at: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/
