Mayor Frankel caught speeding in school zone

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Mayor Lois Frankel was not ticketed Wednesday for going 26 miles an hour over the speed limit in a school zone.

Thursday, she declined requests for interview, saying she didn't have time because a new marina is opening and so is the annual boat show.

A mayor's office did issue the following statement:

Wednesday morning Mayor Frankel was informed by a West Palm Beach officer that she was exceeding the speed limit. No pedestrians, busses or flashing signs were evident. The Mayor apologized to the officer stating she was not aware of the change in speed zones and said quote "please treat me as you would any other driver in this circumstance".  The officer adviser her that he was not issuing a ticket. Officers use discretion in the course of their duties everyday and, in fact, the same officer made five stops in the past 24 hours and issued only two citations.

The mayor was stopped outside Dreyfoos School for the Arts in West Palm Beach.
