Beaten Deerfield teen shows signs of improvement

DEERFIELD, FL (WFLX) - Doctors said beaten teen Josie Lou Ratley moved slightly in her hospital bed over the weekend. It's a slight improvement in her condition since she was brutally beaten outside her middle school March 17.

Family photos show Josie's mother visited her Easter bringing her a large basket full of art supplies.

Doctors hope Josie will soon be able to breath on her own without a ventilator.

Last week, doctors tried to bring her out of a medically induced coma with disappointing results.

Police say Josie was attacked outside her school by a friend's boyfriend. Allegedly, the boy attacked Josie after a text message referencing the suicide of his brother.

Police said the boy punched and stomped Josie's head with steel-toed boots. The suspect is now on suicide watch at a juvenile detention center where he is being held on charges of premeditated attempted murder.

Also held is a 13-year-old girl who, investigators say, is an accomplice.
