Detectives say man killed escort and dumped her body

An 18-year-old's life was cut short.

She was strangled and her body was dumped on a vacant wooded lot in the Acreage four years ago.

Now, detectives say, they've arrested the man who killed Shantay Huntington.

Guillermo Romero, of Miami-Dade County, went before a judge in Palm Beach County Friday, charged with first degree murder in Huntington's death.

Reached by phone in Colorado, Margaret Leyba, the young woman's mother, said learning of the arrest was bittersweet.

"We can now start the process of bringing the killer to justice," she said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's cold case Detective Michelle Romagnoli said several labs were working to connect evidence to a suspect.

And that fated connection came last month when crime lab technicians matched DNA from the murder scene to the DNA of  Romero.

Det. Romagnoli says 18-year-old Huntington and her boyfriend had just come to Miami from the Denver area. She was working in Miami as an escort.

Although Romero denies knowing Huntington, detectives believe he hired her, strangled her and dumped her body in the Acreage.

"I know we all have our faults, but she was a sweet girl, you know.  We just miss her dearly.  We miss her so much."

Romero is being held with no bail.
