FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (AP) - A Florida girl allegedly severely beaten by a classmate will undergo a third brain surgery.
Josie Lou Ratley's mother told NBC's "Today" show on Monday that the 15-year-old girl is recovering, but she's confused about why she's in the hospital.
A 15-year-old boy is charged as an adult with premeditated attempted murder. Authorities say Wayne Treacy punched and stomped on Ratley with steel-toed boots, leaving her comatose. Treacy's attorney has said the teen plans to plead not guilty.
Ratley's attorney Rick Freedman says he thinks charging Treacy as an adult was the right decision.
A 13-year-old girl accused of identifying Ratley to Treacy, knowing that he intended to harm her, has been charged as a juvenile with principal to attempted murder. She has pleaded not guilty.
