BELLE GLADE, FL (WFLX) - A baby, abandoned by his mother in the middle of a busy Belle Glade road, was rescued by a good Samaritan Tuesday morning.
"If nobody would have came and rescued that baby, that baby could've gotten killed," said a witness.
"It kind of looked like a baby, but I wasn't sure if that's what it was," said Cayson. "I still can't believe that happened, but, I think, once I realized that was a baby on the road, main concern was making sure the baby was okay."
Cayson says she was driving down Avenue D on the other side of Main Street when she noticed a car backing out of the driveway of a house. She says the car pulled into the street and stopped. That's when the passenger opened the door and without getting out of the car just left the child in the middle of the road.
"I went and picked up the baby and kind of looked at him and couldn't believe it," Cayson recalled. "I immediately called 911."
The baby's mother, 19-year-old Wendi Charlate, returned to the scene a half hour later and told police she left her baby in the road because the child's father was supposed to come pick him up. Charlate is now charged with child abuse and child neglect.
Wendi Charlate was released from jail on a $1,000 bond and ordered to a county supervised program.
As for the child, officials with the Department of Children and Families say their first priority is to place the baby with another parent or relative.
