ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLX) - It's the move many people across Florida have been waiting on. A big announcement by Governor Charlie Crist came Thursday.
Crist says he's running for the U.S. Senate seat as an Independent. Speaking from the Governor's hometown of St. Petersburg, he confirmed the rumors we first reported Monday that he will abandon the Republican party.
It's still too early to tell how the change will affect Crist's run for Senate, but one thing we can tell you, according to recent poll numbers, his Republican opponent, Marco Rubio, is far ahead in the Republican primary.
Meanwhile, Marco Rubio is reacting to Crist's decision to run as an Independent. He says it doesn't change a thing as far as the senate race is concerned. Rubio's already picked up plenty of support from high-ranking Republicans including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
