OCEAN RIDGE, FL (WFLX) - Using a megaphone, armed with pictures and 'BP Blows' t-shirts about 30 environmentalists from Greenpeace, Equality Florida, Palm Beach County Environmental Commission and other groups got together for what truly is a grass roots effort to protect the county from hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil that could invade our coast.

"We all love our county, love our state. This is more than a Palm Beach County event, but we need to get organized here. We need to be prepared here," said Allan Hendricks who organized Tuesday night's event at Boynton Inlet Park to gather all of the county's top environmental activists for the first time.

They rounded up names and contact numbers, provided information on how it could impact our fragile ecosystem and called for beach clean-ups. Some reports indicate the oil could be on our door step within 30 days.

"If anything comes up on the beach, it's easier to clean if it's already clean," added Hendricks.

Ruthie Cassidy says her relatives in Alaska who are local fishermen have never recovered after the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.

Cassidy, like some of these other environmentalists, fear our impact could be worse.

"There's still oil on the beaches in Alaska 21 years later, it's not gone. It will be much worse here because of the nature of the marshlands, the Everglades," said Cassidy.

If you would like to volunteer or get in touch with environmentalists please e-mail Allan Hendricks of Equality Florida at EQFLPBC@YAHOO.COM.
