HOLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) - Prosecutors say a South Florida teenager has been charged with manslaughter and his mother with failing to properly store a gun used to fatally shoot a 13-year-old boy.
Fourteen-year-old Jeff Dilworth has been charged as an adult in the death of Daniel Torres. He and his mother, Shari Edwards, are expected to surrender to authorities.
Dilworth is being charged as an adult.
The shooting was initially classified as accidental, but a prosecutor said criminal charges are warranted.
According to a search warrant, Dilworth took a handgun from his mother's bedroom nightstand to show his friend. He told investigators Torres walked in front of him as he was checking to see if the gun was empty.
In a a 911 call, Dilworth cried that he had shot his best friend on accident.
