VERO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - At the end of May, deputies say Abran Gutierrez was rushed to the hospital with one bad toothache. The toothache turned out to be an infection, which got into his blood stream.
He told hospital staff he was seeking treatment at the apartment of Diego Gonzalez. He says Gonzalez was attempting to pull out his infected tooth for him, but it didn't work.
Deputies questioned Gonzalez, who denies ever performing any dental work on people, but detectives say they have plenty of witness statements and pictures that prove otherwise.
"If a problem occurred there, if there was some type of emergency, someone could die from dental work," says Detective Kevin Heinig.
The victim's granddaughter states "We knew he didn't have a license here, but since they trust him and stuff, they thought he was going to do a good job."
Gonzalez was arrested and charged with practicing dentistry without a license. Deputies say he did not have a license to practice in the U.S., but did have licenses for Mexico and Columbia.
