Condo owners find relief in new legislation

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - Governor Crist has signed a new law which is supposed to help struggling condo owners.

It's called the Distressed Condo Relief Act and it empowers people who live in condos throughout the state. The law will make it easier for condo associations to get banks holding empty foreclosed units to pay more in association dues so everyone else isn't stuck with their bill.

"The association fees keep going up, up and up and we keep getting assessed on top of our regular maintenance."

It also allows associations to ban condo owners from the swimming pool and clubhouse if they haven't paid their dues. The law, in addition, gives associations the power to collect rent directly from tenants when the owners are not paying fees.

This law goes into effect July 1.
