Port St. Lucie couple abuse adopted son

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A local couple charged with heartbreaking child abuse against their adopted son. It happened at the couple's Port St. Lucie home on Southwest Estaugh Avenue.

Police found their 12-year-old son a mile and a half from that home, in his pajamas and bare feet. He said he ran away because he was afraid of being punished. He told officers his adoptive father stuffed a sock in his mouth and taped it shut to keep him quiet while his mom, Beverly Watts, would beat him with a belt and extension cord.

"If they did what they said they did, then they should be locked up. Livin' just down the street from them I had no idea something like that was going on. So obviously it's something that had to have been going on for a while because something like that doesn't just happen overnight."

The boy is now in state custody, as well as two other children who were in the process of being adopted by the couple.

Police are working on charges against the father.
