Police: Store clerk kills robber

Police have released the name of an armed robber who was shot and killed by a convenience store clerk Saturday night.

The robber who was killed Saturday night by a store clerk has a criminal record and got out of prison less than a year ago.

Tyrone Pinkney, 23, of Lantana was identified through fingerprints as being the armed robber.

Police say Pinkney went into the Community Food Market on NW 5th Avenue in Delray Beach and tried to rob two clerks at gunpoint.

One of the clerks ducked behind the counter and Pinkney fired. The other clerk pulled out a gun and shot Pinkney, hitting him in the chest and he died.

We asked police what they think of the clerk's decision to shoot at the robber, instead of just letting him have the money and run out.

"Clearly our clerk perceived in this case that he could respond in this manner. Is it advisable? No, but it worked for him in this manner. What's more not advisable is entering a store with a gun, trying to rob it," said police spokesman Jeff Messer.

Pinkney has prior convictions for fleeing and eluding police and sale of cocaine.

He was just released from prison in September.

According to our news partners at the Palm Beach Post, Pinkney was linked to the slaying of a Lake Worth convenience store clerk last November but was never charged.
