Breaking health news: Telescope implants for the eye

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - Government regulators just approved a first-of-its-kind telescope that can be implanted in your eye.

It may sound like something out of the "Bionic Man" but it's actually meant to help millions of people suffering from end-stage macular degeneration.

The tiny telescope replaces the natural lens and magnifies an image more than two times. It also eases the blind spots that come with the incurable disease.

Because of the safety risks, The FDA set guidelines on who qualifies for the telescope implant. It's only for patients 75 or older with severe macular degeneration who also have a cataract that needs removal.
