Blue Crab season gets extension

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - Struggling fishermen in Southwest Florida are getting a bit of a break. Blue Crab season has been extended by ten days due to the Gulf oil spill. And crabbers are welcoming the extension.

"Ten extra days is going to help every crabber out there. It's going to give them ten extra days to make money, ten extra days to work on the water that they may or may not have, you know, a few months from now."

"Trying to give these guys a little bit of time to get some extra work in before this thing could possibly could hit us, you know? We don't just police these guys, you know; we work together."

Right now, 33 percent of the gulf of Mexico is off-limits to fishing.
