(WFLX) - More than a dozen people are behind bars Monday night accused of lying to get federal rental assistance.

Thirteen people have been arrested on charges of misappropriation of public assistance money, fraud, larceny, and embezzlement. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, along with state attorney Michael McAuliffe and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the arrest Monday morning as part of 'Operation Shield.'

So far, the fraud is totaling more than half a million dollars. Among those arrested, Deborah Moore and Toral Frazier of Boynton Beach are accused of using a stun gun and box cutter in the attack of a pregnant woman.

Investigators say these arrests are just the beginning. " These are thugs and that's why they are renting these places. They're drug dealers and they're dragging the quality of life down in the neighborhoods. We want them out of these areas."

Investigators say about 7,500 people are on the waiting list for public housing.
