Cholesterol check for your children

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - A new study says that our kids are in such poor health these days that family history alone is not enough to determine if a child should be tested for high cholesterol.

The study found that a third of the children who had no family history did in deed have high cholesterol.

The study out of West Virginia suggests that children be tested and then put on drugs to regulate high cholesterol if needed. Other doctors say it's not a good idea to put children on drugs they might have to take for the rest of their lives.

Dr. Alberto Marante of Palm's West says changing a child's diet can make dramatic changes. "Kids today are exposed to an abundance of really bad foods and food not well-balanced which plays into the cholesterol problems we have today."

Dr. Marante says he is also seeing a lot of children with adult diseases such as gall stones and type 2 diabetes. All of it goes back to a poor diet.

"A simple solution is to make sure your child is eating well-balanced, healthy meals, cutting back on the fast food and to make sure they exercise or play outside for at least an hour a day."
