Bathroom death lands mental health facility hefty lawsuit

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - A daughter is fighting to avenge her mother's death at a Treasure Coast mental health facility.

The family's attorney filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit today against New Horizons of the Treasure Coast in Fort Pierce. 59-year-old Sharon Bronowicz fought extreme depression, suicidal thoughts and self-mutilation for more than a decade. In November 2008, her daughter Renee Hill says she tried to get her mother help.

Legal documents show that the state admitted Bronowicz to New Horizons. After being there two months, the lawsuit says, Bronowicz was left in a bathtub alone for 45 minutes. Her daughter tells us her mother was later found by staff, blue and lifeless.

"Complete sadness, I just can't believe people would not pay attention."

"There is no amount of money that can bring back Sharon. Really, the purpose of this suit is to prevent tragedy."

The president of New Horizons gave us a statement saying "There's another side to this story. We'll have our say in court when the time comes."
