BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - A Boca Raton woman is speaking out after thieves stole her identity and we can all learn from her story.

Linda Wakeel says crooks broke into her car and stole all of her important identification and banking cards. Wakeel closed her checking account and canceled her credit cards, but police say 2 people tried to withdraw 2,100 dollars from her bank.

An alert teller noticed Wakeel's license picture did not match the woman in the drive-through. She called police and the two suspects were caught.

"I just gave her a lot of credit for being sharp and very thankful. I love the idea they're in jail and I hope they stay there for a long time," said Wakeel.

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States. So, here are some tips for protecting yourself. Police say only carry a minimum number of credit cards and never carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse. Memorize your pin numbers and if someone does steal your information, report it right away. Do not hesitate.
