Ianieri gets three years for construction DUI

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - "I am taking full responsibility for my actions." Thursday was sentencing day for 21-year-old Tiffany Ianieri.

Fighting tears, she apologized to her victim Howell Chambers, who was also in court. Mr. Chambers was working on Forest Hill Boulevard on an overnight road crew during June of last year. "I was picking up my road cones, and she came out of nowhere and knocked me airborne."

Ianieri, investigators say, was driving a pick-up with a suspended license and a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. In spite of a 'flashing arrow' sign, police say Ianieri never hit the brakes. Her truck stopped only by the work vehicle.

"I broke about 14 bones and was in a coma," said Chambers. "I'm glad to be alive, but it changed my whole life. Can't do the things I used to do, you know."

Members of Ianieri's family say Tiffany suffered a troubled home life. She now attends AA meetings, works, and studies radiology in college. "This is not the type of person I am. I take joy in helping people and bringing smiles to faces," said Ianieri.

With no priors, the defense asked for probation only and the prosecutor's request was just under two years. The judge gave Ianieri three years in prison, stunning Ianieri and her family and friends.

"Anybody gets caught, they start cleaning their act up. I'm an alcoholic." Chambers says he's sober 10 years, and while sympathetic, approves of Ianieri's sentence. "When your freedom's taken away and you're locked up, it makes you think. Yeah, she needs that."
