Pet safety tips to prevent house fires

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - Firefighters warn that about a thousand house fires around the country are accidentally started by house pets each year.

That's why Thursday, as part of National Pet Fire Safety Day, Palm Beach County firefighter/paramedic Robert Smallacombe gave a crowd of pet owners at Animal Care and Control some pet safety tips. "A lot of the stuff are things you wouldn't think about until you've experienced a pet knocking something over or started a fire accidentally around the house."

Here are some of those tips:

1. Extinguish any open flames. Candles can easily be knocked down by a cat or dog.

2. You may want to remove or cover stove knobs because a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in pet fires.

3. Take care of those loose or frayed wires. A pet running into them can easily get electrocuted and start an electrical fire.

4. Lastly, a glass water bowl on a wooden deck with help of the sun's rays can actually help ignite the wood, so be careful.
