Largest Medicare fraud busts doctors & nurses

MIAMI (WFLX) - The largest Medicare fraud bust ever went down landing many in the Miami jail Friday.

The fraud spands five states and totals more than $250 million.

Among those arrested are doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. They're accused of over charging for services and equipment and, in many cases, billing patients they'd never even seen.

Nearly one-third of the suspects indicted this week are from South Florida where Medicare fraud is through the roof.

The problem is so widespread that Boca Raton Congressman Ron Klein is co-authoring a bill that would double the amount of prison time and fines for those who commit
Medicare fraud.

Congressman Klein said, "There should be a stronger deterrent. People who do get caught are gonna serve time and a lot of it and gonna pay big fines."

Ninety-four suspects were indicted; so far, 36 people have been arrested. More than 360 agents participated in Friday's raids.
