Don't get scammed from ATM skimming

Posted by Elizabeth Stewart - email

(WFLX) - Just last week, a man was arrested for allegedly skimming thousands of dollars from bank accounts across South Florida. So how can you protect yourself? Experts say cover the pin pad many times; Crooks use cameras with these skimming devices to capture your pin. Here are some others.

Tips To Prevent ATM Skimming

  • Look over machine
  • Shake debit card slot to make sure it's secure
  • Look around to make sure no one is around
  • Check bank balance often

Boca police say you shouldn't leave it all up to your bank to protect you. "Usually when banks find out, it's two to three days later, 'cause banks don't even know sometimes this is happening to them until someone calls and says, 'Hey, I lost $1,000 out of my account.'"

Police add that especially now with criminals getting more advanced with these devices, whether it's Bluetooth technology or some other transmitter device, people really need to be aware when using ATM's.

So, if you see anything that just doesn't look right about your ATM , don't use it and tell your bank.
