President pushing for female pay equality

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - The Federal Government says the Equal Pay Act of 1963 has done little to help women especially giving them any legal avenues to force employers to provide equal pay.

People on the streets of downtown West Palm Beach say it's about time for a change.

"It's unfair because we are doing the same job," said one woman.

"They absolutely shouldn't get less money because they are a woman," said a man.

With women on average making only $.77 to every $1 a man makes, the president is calling on Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The act would allow female workers to demand employers justify any disparity in pay in the workplace.

The employer couldn't retaliate and if the issue went to court, women could seek pain and suffering damages.

The head of the ACLU of Palm Beach County, attorney James K. Green, says it levels the playing field

"It will provide real incentive for employers small and large to take a look at their pay for women and try to equalize it," said Green.

The proposed law would make it easier for women to sue and some Republican lawmakers have argued that the bill could aid trial lawyers more than it would help women.

The bill passed the House last year. Now, the President will try to convince the Senate to do the same.
