(WFLX) - A federal judge says cheerleading is not a competitive sport.
That ruling comes after a battle at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut over whether cheerleading qualified for collegiate athletics.
It's causing a lot of rebuttal from cheerleading organizations. "They say athleticism is the basis of the whole thing. It's not just about being on the sidelines. Our kids are athletes. They train just like an athlete, they are in a gym," said Katie Miller, manager at Cheer Station.
The ruling states that what makes an activity a sport is that the athletes must practice, have coaches, and competition must be its main goal.
The judge says cheerleading competitions are too subjective to make it qualify as a sport.
