Your receipts could be killing you

(WFLX) - A consumer alert coming out is involving a possible hazard at your grocery store or even your favorite fast food restaurant. But, it has nothing to do with the food. The concern lies in the receipt.

A new study from the Environmental Working Group found the chemical Bisphenol A, or BPA, on 40 percent of the paper receipts researchers looked at. And they came from popular stores and restaurants like Wal-Mart, McDonalds, KFC, even the U.S. Postal Service. The study found the chemical levels were higher than those in canned foods and baby bottles.

Now, some experts say BPA can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and developmental problems in small children. And If you think about it, we handle these things all the time. You might have a wad of them in your wallet or purse.

But health experts say the main danger is when the chemicals come into contact with your food or fingers. They can then be ingested. The best advice is to wash your hands after handling the paper.

By the way, Target and Starbucks got the all clear. No BPA found in their receipts.
