MIAMI (WFLX) - A little girl survives a rare attack in the waters off the Florida Keys.
Nine-year-old Michelle Casasola was snorkeling over the weekend when a barracuda sunk its razor sharp teeth into her hand.
Casasola says she thought someone kicked her; then, she realized it was something much more vicious. "I thought someone just hit me accidentally while they were swimming, but it was a barracuda or a fish."
"Anyone whose seen a barracuda knows that their mouths are filled with literally hundreds of little razor blades, and, in that split instant, the fish grabbed her and turned away," said Pediatric Plastic Surgery Dr. Chad Perlyn. "It cut the palm of her hand."
The damage was so severe, the 9-year-old girl had to undergo a six-hour surgery to repair her hand at Miami's Children's Hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.
