ST LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A St. Lucie County firefighter has been reassigned after he and another man were arrested for allegedly capturing a gator.

Twenty-three-year-old Peter Berger and 27-year-old Donald Herchenroder, who is the firefighter, are charged with felony unlawful taking of an alligator.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the two men, along with an 18-year-old woman, where fishing in Palm Lake. That's when they caught the gator, but it bit the 18-year-old woman's boot. The firefighter told investigators she had to use a hatchet to get the gator off her foot.

Investigators believe the trio was using meat on a hook to catch the reptile. There is a warrant for the woman's arrest.

Both men were released Wednesday from the St. Lucie County jail each on $2,500 bail.
