Florida Highway Patrol responded to 28 accidents on northbound Interstate 95 in the Hobe Sound area in a 2-hour period.
The likely culprit: rain.
There were so many wrecks Friday evening that troopers shut down the highway and diverted traffic off at Indiantown Road to clear up the mess. The accidents were along a 10-mile stretch from the Palm Beach County line to Hobe Sound.
There were no serious injuries reported, although several people were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
Traffic was backed up for more than 5 miles for much of the night.
There are so many crashes that emergency responders from surrounding areas were called to help out. Martin County Sheriff's Office responded to five of the crashes within a one-hour period. Palm Beach County also assisted.
