Rabid raccoon attacks dogs in Jupiter Farms

Posted by Rachel Leigh - email

JUPITER FARMS, FL (WFLX) -The first rabid animal this year was confirmed Tuesday.

A raccoon that came in contact with two Rottweilers Sunday tested positive for rabies by the Florida State Laboratory in Lantana. There has been no human exposure.

The dogs sustained lacerations and are being reviewed by Animal Care and Control that their rabies vaccinations are current. They face mandatory six months of isolated quarantine if found non-compliant.

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can be prevented but not cured. The virus attacks the nerves and brain tissue of warm blooded animals including people.

Persons in the Jupiter Farms area are being advised to avoid contact with wildlife and review their domestic animal vaccination records to assure they are current with the rabies vaccine.

Persons who may have come in contact with a raccoon in the area should contact the Palm Beach County Health Department at 561-671-4184.
