A Florida immigration law?

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Wednesday's big announcement on a possible Florida illegal immigrant law has those who could be targeted nervous.

They plan to push for their own bill to curb illegal immigration. Attorney General Bill McCollum along with several state representatives told reporters they plan to take a stand against the more than 700,000 illegal immigrants in Florida.

They say it will be a bill to protect the state and not one to target those living here illegally.

The proposed bill is similar to the one in Arizona. It, too, would require law enforcement officers to check suspected illegal immigrants' status during a traffic stop, require businesses to verify a new hire is legal, and require immigrants to carry their immigration documentation or face jail time.

The differences: Florida's would enhance penalties to illegals who commit crimes and allow judges to consider immigration status before setting bond.

Representative William Snyder says, "This will be a long and arduous process, there is a lot of emotions. My goal is to pick a course down the middle."

The bill has not yet been filed. All elected officials say they plan to hold several town hall meetings to hear from citizens first.
