HOBE SOUND (WFLX)--- A Martin County horse in Hobe Sound tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. The three year old horse was euthanized over the weekend after showing signs of severe neurological disease and had not been vaccinated for EEE.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis or EEE can be contracted from mosquito bites and occurs in the eastern half of the United States.
In June, two chickens from a sentinel flock in Martin County tested positive for EEE; a horse in the Jupiter area also tested positive for EEE. Horse owners are encouraged to vaccinate their horses for EEE, as well as West Nile Virus.
