PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX)---A Port St. Lucie resident's cell phone photo of a man stealing political signs has led to the man's arrest.
Derek Tucker was driving by when he saw 58-year-old Steven Lewis Nelson removing three "Cooper for Mayor" signs from the area. Tucker then emailed it to the candidate's son.
Political candidate Chris Cooper had reported that hundreds of his campaign signs have been stolen recently. He just happens to live on the same street as the thief.
St. Lucie Sheriff's detective says the man admitted to stealing the signs and noticed someone taking a picture, he claims Cooper "had been harassing him for years."
Tuesday morning, Nelson was arrested for second degree petty theft, a misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to $500 fine and up to six months in jail following conviction.
