KEY BISCAYNE, FL (WFLX) - A Palm City resident speared a lionfish off Key Biscayne in Miami Sunday afternoon.

Avid fisher Kristen Sukolsky says it's scary to see this invasive species in our waters.

Lionfish are a species of venomous marine fish which can be identified by their extremely long and separated spines. It is also common for them to have stripes like the one in Sukolsky's photos.

Recently, environmental leaders launched an 'Eat the Lionfish' campaign. Conservationists are urging people to dine on the invasive species because they are attacking reefs.

They're hoping to increase people's appetite for the fish and keep them from damaging the reefs.
