Canines trained to sniff out bed bugs

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - If you think you have bed bugs in your home, you may want to enlist in the help of a dog, like Angel, from K-9 PI to help.

Angel is a beagle specially trained to sniff out live bed bugs and viable eggs.

According to her owner, David Trietiak, it's one of the most effective ways to find out exactly where the bugs are hiding out.

They are called bed bugs, but they can live almost anywhere around the house.

People hire dogs, like Angel and K-9 PI,  to find the bugs, so exterminators know exactly what areas they need to target.

Trietiak tells us business has been good and is getting better with more reports of bugs biting homeowners.

Where do bed bugs come from?

They hitch a ride on us and can travel hundreds of miles with you, and you might not even know it. Some of the worst areas are big cities.

As we get closer to the winter and the tourism season, Trietiak says to get ready.

"It's just grown so much and now that we are going into season -- especially with rental season down here in Florida -- Florida is going to see a huge emergence come September, October and November," he said.

It can be very expensive to hire an exterminator, about $200 a room. Chemicals don't work all that well.

Normally houses have to be heated up to 140 degrees to kill off the infestation. Then the dog comes back out to the house to make sure all the bugs are gone.
